Public Service Loan Forgiveness

The College Cost Reduction and Access Act has established a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program for students who pursue a career in a public service setting.  The main goal is to remove debt as a consideration to those pursuing a career in public service, as most borrowers will earn less in the public service setting versus the private sector.

The PSLF program discharges any remaining debt after 10 years of full-time employment in public service.  The borrower must have made 120 on-time payments as part of the Direct Loan program in order to obtain this benefit.  A public service job may include public health, health care support, school-based services, and employees of tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations.

The program applies to payments made on or after 2007 and only to payments on a Federal Direct Loan, including the Federal Direct Stafford and Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loans.

To maximize the amount of forgiveness, borrowers should use one of the income-based repayments plans.  Please click here for more information.

National Health Service Corps

As part of the ongoing attempt to help student borrowers, the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) has received additional funding to support their loan repayment programs.  Visit www.NHSC.hrsa.gov for more information on this. You can also go onto www.studentloans.gov for information on all loan repayment programs.
