Counseling Psychology in Community Mental Health Master of Arts

In 2011, William James College launched a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in Community Mental Health (CMH). This was conceived as a partnership with community mental health agencies, and allowed agency employees to pursue a master's degree in a period of three years while they maintained employment in the agency. We graduated the first class of seven students in 2014 and the second class of three students in 2015. Our first partners have been YOU, Inc., The Bridge of Central Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (MSPCC).

Counseling Psychology Master of Arts

Graduates of the MA in Counseling Psychology program will have fulfilled all the educational requirements to qualify for LMHC licensure in Massachusetts.

This program prepares graduates to function as mental health counselors after two years of full-time study. In addition to the standard coursework, there are opportunities to pursue concentrated elective coursework to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to working in particular settings or with specific populations. Although the primary goal is to prepare master's level clinicians, this program will also provide students with some of the necessary foundations for pursuing further graduate study. Graduates of this program will have fulfilled all educational requirements to qualify for licensure in the state of Massachusetts as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

Health Psychology and Counseling Master of Arts

The Master of Arts in Counseling and Health Psychology prepares graduates to function as independent professional mental health counselors, in both behavioral health and medical settings. Massachusetts has quickly become one of few states in the country leading health care reform. Specifically, there is a movement toward using integrated behavioral health models within primary care and other medical settings.  Through a series of several courses, our graduates will gain a solid background in Health Psychology, Behavioral Medicine interventions, and Integrated Behavioral Health in medical settings. Students will learn to function as members of interdisciplinary teams and in the treatment of chronic illness and other behavioral health and medical specialties. The Counseling and Health Psychology program utilizes the bio-psycho-social-spiritual frame to understand health and human behavior. With the understanding of the Mind/Body connection, the mental health professional will be exposed to Behavioral Medicine interventions including evidence-based approaches to care, motivational interviewing, brief treatment models, biofeedback, hypnosis, and other relaxation techniques. Graduates of this program will have fulfilled all educational requirements to qualify for licensure in the state of Massachusetts as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and develop basic competencies in being a key member of a team, ready to conduct brief assessments, consult with colleagues from other health care disciplines, and treat patients and families in both brief and extended models of care.

Couples and Family Therapy Master of Arts or Respecialization Certificate

William James College offers two options for Couples and Family training

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and Couples and Family Therapy (CFT)  is a 60-credit program that can be completed in two years, full-time or three years part-time. Graduates will be well prepared with a strong foundation to provide therapeutic services to individuals, couples and families, as well as to agencies and communities.

The Couples and Family Therapy  (CFT) Respecialization Certificate helps individuals with a clinical or counseling psychology degree obtain the necessary qualifications to pursue a license as a marriage and family therapist in Massachusetts. The respecialization certificate takes a minimum of one academic year, depending on the courses students need. Each applicant's academic background will be assessed and an individualized study plan will be created.

Expressive Arts Therapy Counseling Psychology Master of Arts

A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Trauma and Resiliency

The MA in Counseling Psychology in Expressive Arts Therapy program is specifically designed to prepare the next generation of mental health professionals in the therapeutic use of expressive arts processes for personal, family and community transformation. Combining expressive arts with strong counseling and trauma treatment skills can be a powerful way to help the lives of individuals, families, and communities throughout many regions of the world.

Trauma Sensitive
Our program integrates information on trauma, affect regulation, and the development of a strengths based, phase-oriented approach to trauma treatment to support the stabilization and resiliency of the client. Students learn first hand how to develop a sense of safety in their body, in their environment, and in their relationships both intrapsychically and interpersonally to then translate this learning to their clients and maintain a regulated, supportive therapeutic relationship.

Cross Cultural Competency
The Counseling Psychology and Expressive Arts Therapy program incorporates participatory action research, liberation psychology, and traditional (non-western) models of healing and client/community engagement.An international immersion course in Guatemala is offered where students learn how to identify their role, approach, and relevant materials in an international-based cross-cultural relationship.The Latino Mental Health Program at William James College also offers travel and learning opportunities abroad.

Expressive Arts Therapy
The use of expressive arts therapy encourages interaction, sharing and trust in a safe place. Our curriculum mirrors this. Students will learn the history, ethics and practice of expressive arts therapy, integrated with the core curriculum of the counseling psychology requirements, which focuses on resilience and the integration of diversity, difference and inclusion.

Licensure eligible in Mental Health Counseling in Massachusetts and Registered Expressive Arts Therapy Eligible
The William James College program is among a few programs in New England to meet the educational standards for both the International Expressive Art Therapy Association for becoming a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT), and the requirements of the Massachusetts Board of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Profession to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Students seeking licensure in other states must ensure that their degree program satisfies the requirements of the licensing board in that state(s).

Forensic and Counseling Psychology Master of Arts

Graduates of the MA in Forensic and Counseling Psychology program will have fulfilled all the educational requirements to qualify for LMHC licensure in Massachusetts.

This program examines the relationship between psychology and the legal system, and trains students at this intersection as it relates to applying psychological principles to legal issues in judicial, correctional, clinical, administrative, and education systems. Although the primary goal is to prepare master’s level clinicians, this program will also provide students with some of the necessary foundations for pursuing further graduate study. Graduates of this program will have fulfilled all educational requirements to qualify for licensure in the state of Massachusetts as Mental Health Counselors (LMHC).

Global Mental Health Concentration for Counseling Psychology Master of Arts

We are no longer accepting applications for the MA in Counseling Psychology and Global Mental HealthWe now offer a concentration in Global Mental Health, which is a specialization option in any of our academic programs.

The MA in Counseling Psychology in Global Mental Health (GMH) prepares students for careers to work with people and communities affected by the trauma of war, natural disasters, human trafficking, and gender and ethnic oppression and violence around the globe and in the United States.

Immersions

Students in the Counseling Psychology in Global Mental Health can also enhance their education with immersion experiences facilitated by William James College faculty. Immersions begin with instruction in post modern, dialogical, and critical theories that potentiate cross-cultural and cross-national collaborations. Students subsequently travel outside of the United States to apply the knowledge they gained in the classroom. Most importantly, students learn both the benefits and challenges of applying such frames in interactions with foreign professionals and populations. The main objective is for the student to develop the critical thinking and relational skills (e.g. tolerance, mutual respect, affect based trust) necessary to continue to successfully engage in international work beyond graduation. Yearly trips are scheduled to Costa Rica and Ecuador through the Latino Mental Health concentration at William James College. William James College faculty also have ongoing involvement with organizations and universities in Haiti, Palestine, and Guatemala among several others, and they facilitate student trips to these countries.
