Hello prospective WJC students!

My name is Natasha Williams and I am from Randolph, MA. I received my undergraduate degree in Spring 2018 from Framingham State University in Psychology, and my Masters recently in Organizational Psychology with a concentration in Talent Management here at William James. I just started a new job as a Talent Management Strategist in the HR department of a property management company.

During my time as an undergrad, I knew I had a passion for psychology, but never knew what field I specifically wanted to go into. As a member of my college’s Psychology Club, we decided hosting a graduate panel would be useful in helping other students to determine where they wanted to go after graduation. We partnered with William James College and they came to present at the panel. During the presentation, Organizational Psychology was brought up, and, as I had never heard of it before, I asked question after question about it. I’d always been interested in how organizations functioned and employee experience and was very excited to find out there was a field that focused exclusively on those things.

Choosing to go from undergrad straight into a master’s program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I knew that I would still be in a “school mindset” and I wanted to jump right into it. During my application process, I interviewed with Miranda Ralston and Suzanne Devlin, who both made me feel more comfortable with the decision I was making. Speaking with them about the program and the impact Organizational Psychology can have on companies and their employees made me even more excited about starting this program. I chose Talent Management because I think understanding people in their entirety is a vital part of teamwork and people should feel useful on all levels in order to be effective in their positions. I wanted to help employees reach their highest potential and encourage companies to view their employees from multiple angles.

I chose William James specifically because I felt as though their 11-month blended Organizational Psychology program and cohort model would be a good fit for me. I was absolutely correct. The blended program has allowed me to work independently, while the cohort model has provided me the opportunity to stay engaged with fellow students.

My advice for a successful first year experience would be to self- reflect on your wants and needs because graduate work is high level and will take up a lot of your time. It’s important to prioritize balance between work, school, family, and self-care. If you can focus on taking care of yourself and reaching out for support when you need it, you’ll be successful! I encourage you to utilize your cohort and your professors if you ever feel overwhelmed or just need to talk; they will happily work with you!
