As a Leadership Psychology PsyD student, you will learn and practice new techniques and tools that you can apply and test in your current role. The knowledge you acquire over the next 4-6 years can have an immediate impact and can produce results for both you and your organization, whether you work internally or as an independent consultant.

“Leadership Psychology” Defined

Leadership Psychology is a unique approach to understanding how individuals function as leaders and followers. The area of study examines those who are leaders themselves, those who are followers, and those who advise leaders. The goal is to understand the elements of being a great leader. The way you perform as a leader influences the performance of your team and colleagues. 

Learn More About the Leadership Psychology Faculty

Dr. Kathryn Stanley is the Department Chair for Organizational and Leadership Psychology and the Program Director for Leadership Psychology. Dr. Stanley and all her faculty teach and work in the field with real organizations facing the same challenges you are. They bring examples and case studies to their teaching.

A Hybrid Program for Working Professionals

Your coursework can be completed at your own pace online through lectures, readings and discussion boards. In addition to online course modules, you will come to campus three times a year in the fall, spring and summer for a 4-day residency.  Students love these residencies because they are able to practice their new skills through experiential learning, meet face to face with their peers and faculty, and build even stronger networking connections. In addition, you will complete a 600-hour practicum and a 400-hour internship project at an organization.  In some cases, this can be your own organization or you can work with a faculty member to identify another project.

The Leadership Psychology Doctorate is 98-credits and can be completed in 4-years full-time or 6-years part-time. There are typically 5-10 students in each entering class. View our Leadership Psychology curriculum here.

Meet Our Students

Students come from diverse backgrounds.  Some are executives, some are on the executive track, and others are leading and supporting teams as managers and directors. Many are managing full-time work, family and personal relationships. They will tell you the support and guidance they receive from faculty is exceptional.  The online and blended format is flexible and allows for great collaboration and networking among the student cohort. A Unique Program for Students from All Professional Backgrounds

Our program is for current and aspiring managers, consultants, and other individuals, with an average of 10 years of work experience, who want to exercise leadership, create lasting and positive change, and motivate employees.  In other words, they want to be more influential leaders.

The Leadership PsyD Program is geared toward working professionals looking to build and/or enhance careers in organizational development, leadership training, human resources, executive coaching, non-profit management, or management consulting, among other areas.

Career Opportunities for Leadership Psychology Graduates

Leadership psychologists work within organizations and as external practitioners in any number of roles and titles including: Leadership Development Specialist (manager, director, etc.), Executive Vice President, Senior Talent Manager, Organizational Development Practitioner, Learning and Development Manager, Culture Change Leader, Talent Acquisition Specialist, Executive Coach, Human Resources Business Partner, Training and Development Specialist, Facilitator, Team Development Specialist, among others.

They apply psychological principles of human behavior to intervene and assist leaders in human systems to improve productivity and the quality of work life. Many serve as leaders and consultants in human resources / talent management capacities who help organizations with strategic staffing, training, employee development, and employee morale and retention plans. Others work as systems consultants in the areas of leadership development, team building, strategic planning, quality management, and facilitating organizational change.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, industries are embracing psychology as instrumental to improving performance and efficiency of managers.
